One month removed from the U.S. and I find myself once again at the starting line of a marathon..
I have no idea what I was thinking when I signed up. It was about week or so after I found out about my move to Singapore and I think I was hoping that having some sort of local "financial commitment" would somehow make the transition a little easier...
Whatever the reason, at 5:30am, after riding my bike from my serviced apartment on Orchard to the starting line near my office, the gun went off and I was running down the street at a nice, aggressive clip.. Since I hadn't done a lick of training, and my last "long run" was the marathon at Ironman two months ago, I decided to run the first half as a race, and the second half as a nice easy "jog".. Since I've run many a marathon at a break-neck speed and been forced to shut it all down late in the game (inadvertently), I figured doing so on purpose wouldn't pose a problem for me.
Without going into too much detail, the first 8 miles through the Marina went surprisingly well. The temperature was down-right cold.. I kid you not, I actually felt a bit of a chill. Heading out of the Marina, the route then weaved it's way on to the East Coast Park road for a quick out and back. I hit the 21k mark right at 1:33 and then let my foot off the gas. Half expecting to get passed by several thousand people in the final 13 miles at my new pace, I was surprised when I crossed the finish line in a not-so-impressive 3:31.. 172nd place overall.. top 2%.
